Close up detail of vertical stalks of striated, Black Bamboo, Phyllostaches nigra.  Black bamboo grows to a max. height of roughly 30 feet and is hardy to roughly USDA zone 6.  New stalks, or culms, take 1-2 years in full sun to turn black and can eventually reach roughly 2" in diamter.  Once established, it is drought-tolerant.
